The one rule behind every percentage

A percentage is just a fraction out of 100. “Percent” literally means “per hundred.” Once that clicks, every percentage question becomes the same two operations: to find a percent of something you multiply, and to find what percent one thing is of another you divide. Everything above — discounts, tips, markups, changes — is one of those two moves.

Frequently asked

How do you calculate a percentage of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage divided by 100. For example, 20% of 150 is 150 × 0.20 = 30. The first tool above does this for you — enter the percentage and the number.

How do you find what percentage one number is of another?

Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, 30 out of 120 is (30 ÷ 120) × 100 = 25%. The second tool handles this directly.

How do you calculate percentage change?

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. Going from 80 to 100 is ((100 − 80) ÷ 80) × 100 = a 25% increase. A negative result means a decrease.

How do you calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100. A 18% tip on a $60 bill is $60 × 0.18 = $10.80, making the total $70.80. The tip tool above shows both the tip amount and the total.
