The quick mental shortcut

To estimate a tip in your head: 10% is just the bill with the decimal moved one place left ($46 → $4.60). For 20%, double that. For 15%, take the 10% figure and add half of it again. The calculator is faster and exact, and it handles the part that actually causes friction at the table — splitting the total fairly once the tip is in.

Frequently asked

How do you calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100. A 20% tip on a $50 bill is 50 × 0.20 = $10, making the total $60. The calculator does this instantly and also splits it across however many people are paying.

How much should I tip?

In the US, 15–20% is the common range for table service, with 18–20% typical for good service. Many people tip less for counter service or use local norms elsewhere. The calculator has quick presets for 10 through 25% plus a custom field.

How do you split a bill with a tip between friends?

Add the tip to the bill first, then divide the total by the number of people. The calculator shows the per-person amount and how much of it is tip, so everyone pays their fair share including gratuity.

Do you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette guides usually say to tip on the pre-tax amount, though many people simply tip on the total for convenience. Either is acceptable — enter whichever bill figure you prefer and the calculator handles the rest.
