More than a simple average

A grade point average isn’t just the mean of your grades — it’s weighted by how many credit hours each course carries. That’s why a top grade in a heavy four-credit class moves your GPA more than the same grade in a one-credit elective. Getting the weighting right is the whole point, and it’s exactly where mental math tends to slip.

This calculator handles it for you: enter each course, pick its letter grade, set the credit hours, and your GPA updates instantly on the standard 4.0 scale. Add or remove rows as you like to model a single semester or a full transcript. It’s useful for checking where you stand, and for playing out “what if” scenarios — seeing exactly what grade you’d need next term to hit the average you’re aiming for.

Frequently asked

How is GPA calculated?

GPA is a weighted average. Each letter grade converts to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on), which are multiplied by the course’s credit hours. You add up all those grade-point totals and divide by the total credit hours. This calculator does that automatically as you edit your courses.

What is the 4.0 GPA scale?

On the standard unweighted 4.0 scale, an A is worth 4.0 grade points, a B is 3.0, a C is 2.0, a D is 1.0 and an F is 0. Pluses and minuses adjust the value slightly — an A- is 3.7 and a B+ is 3.3, for example. This tool uses that common scale.

Why do credit hours matter for GPA?

Because GPA is weighted by credits, a grade in a 4-credit course affects your average more than the same grade in a 1-credit course. That is why entering accurate credit hours matters — a strong grade in a heavy course lifts your GPA more than one in a light elective.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

An unweighted GPA caps every course at 4.0 regardless of difficulty. A weighted GPA gives extra points for harder classes such as honours or AP, so it can exceed 4.0. This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale.
